City School District of Albany Breaks Ground On Phase 2

On Saturday, June 1st, the City School District of Albany broke ground on Phase 2 of the renovation and expansion of Albany High School. Prior to the ceremony, students, faculty, and the community had the opportunity to tour the construction site for Phase 1 of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in January 2020.

“It’s great to see the excitement from the community walking through the spaces and seeing this project become a reality, knowing that their investment in the school will give Albany students the tools to succeed and thrive,” said CSArch Executive Principal Richard Peckham, who helped give tours of the Phase 1 construction site on Saturday. “As a long-time partner of ours, we are thrilled for the district.”

The 4-phased project will completely renovate the existing 378,000 square foot complex and add more than 250,000 square feet of new facilities to expand the district’s capacity, as enrollment is anticipated to increase by more than 3,000 students over the next decade. Phase 2 consists of constructing a new academic building in front of the school, residing in what is currently the old Washington Avenue parking lot. The new building will house music, art, and foreign-language classrooms and is expected to be complete in Fall 2020.

“As we break ground today on Phase 2 of our ‘Rebuilding Albany High School’ project, and with the framework of Phase 1 rising right behind me, it is an opportunity, once again, to look into the future with great enthusiasm,” said Albany Superintendent Kaweeda Adams. “Our community has made a significant investment in the future of education in our city through its support of this project. We are deeply grateful for that.”

The commencement of Phase 2 of the $179.9 million project represents an exciting time for students, staff, and the community, as the new high school will support the district’s mission to partner with the diverse community to inspire learning and engage students in educational settings designed to ensure success.
