Johnson Hall Science Center
CSArch completed the first renovation project since this 20,000 SF science center was originally constructed in the 1960s. The project delivered state-of-the art laboratories to promote student and faculty engagement.
An entire wing of Johnson Hall, comprised of existing labs and prep rooms, was gutted to provide new instruction and experimentation laboratories, preparation rooms, and storage rooms. Through thoughtful planning and reorganization of space, Johnson Hall now has one additional laboratory, a clean room, a walk-in cooler, and a secure chemical storage room. Building systems were also replaced and relocated to meet current codes. Dedicated outdoor air supply systems provide ventilation, minimize cross contamination between lab spaces, and improve the general health and safety for building occupants.
Special consideration was given to the main corridor to provide the science department with an identity. Original student lockers were removed and the alcoves were replaced with benches to provide students a place to socialize before and after class. The design team worked closely with the Herkimer College Foundation to incorporate a major fundraising campaign,The Elements, into the overall design.
In-house services included Architecture, Engineering and Interior Design.
