LEGACY 2020 CAPITAL PROJECT

Coined the Legacy 2020 Capital Project, the redesign of Queensbury High School began in 2013 with a two-year planning process that set the stage for converting the existing school into a modern learning institution.

Kyle Gannon Talks About the Transformation at Queensbury High School

Instructional Communities
The design deconstructs traditional “silos” and replaces them with three interdisciplinary instructional communities that allow for greater collaboration among faculty and students.
Centralized support services such as the High School counseling center, psychological and social services, and the nurse’s office are located in the main school corridor to increase the ease of access for students and parents.

The STEM learning community features a new versatile laboratory that supports science, technology, engineering and math.

The Fine and Performing Arts community provides spaces to inspire art and music. Band, chorus and orchestra have their own rehearsal spaces and six arts studio classrooms provide ample space to inspire creativity.

The Humanities Learning Community supports english language arts, social studies and foreign languages with tiered classrooms that maximize active learning.

Centralized Community Spaces

To control the flow of visitor traffic and separate instructional space from community space, the community room, media center, gallery and student support services are purposefully situated off the main entrance. The media center is directly visible from the gallery, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass to establish the space as a focal point.

Queensbury Community Room

The community room at Queensbury High School provides a large gathering space for meetings and special events. Featuring an arched ceiling and large windows, the room is open and transparent. Large video screens and flexible furniture provide a comfortable atmosphere for any large event at the district.

STEM

The STEM learning community is a hub for technology and collaboration, including a state-of-the-art innovation lab, media and video production classroom, robotics lab and shared makerspaces. Flexible furniture encourages students to work collaboratively and allows teachers to design their classrooms around specific lessons.

Humanities

Humanities classrooms put learning on display with corridor wall glazing and promote active learing with multiple teaching walls, projectors and write-on surfaces.

Fine & Performing Arts
Band, orchestra, and chorus each have their own teaching and rehearsal space. Art classrooms now function as studios with natural light, high ceilings, and visual connectivity between spaces, reflective of a collegiate and professional artist’s environment.
Tier 3 & Extended Learning Spaces

Tier 3 and Extended Learning Spaces are dispersed throughout each learning community, equipped with dynamic, flexible furniture and integrated technology. They support project-based, collaborative learning as an extension of the typical classroom environment.

Auditorium

Located off the main entry, the auditorium received a complete renovation to modernize the space, address acoustical issues, and upgrade lighting and sound technology.

Project Scope

The tax-neutral $39.7 million capital project reimagined the 50-year-old high school building. Planning began in 2013 to develop this project and was approved by voters in 2016. A new secure vestibule and entry enhances student and faculty safety and features stone and wood building materials and textures to complement the nearby Adirondack Mountains. At the rear of the building, a 16,000 sf addition houses a new gymnasium and locker rooms to enhance programming space.

The redesigned high school supports cross-curricular teaching, encourages instructional, professional, and student collaboration, seamlessly integrates technology, and enhances security.
