ICAN, a nonprofit organization that manages the Utica Children’s Museum, announced plans Wednesday to relocate the museum from an antiquated space to a more centralized, modernized childhood learning center on the Parkway.
In partnership with ICAN and the Utica Children’s Museum, CSArch is renovating the building located at 106 Memorial Parkway in Utica, New York, to help realize their vision to cultivate every child’s curiosity and creativity through a new, family-focused, interactive learning environment.
“We have partnered with an innovative architectural firm, CSArch, who will oversee the planning and design for the entire facility,” said Steve Bulger, executive director of ICAN. “We are honored to share a conceptual rendering of our future family center that captures the evolution of the Utica Children’s Museum to a modern educational destination for families.”

The project is a renovation of an existing 40,000 sf, three-story building previously occupied by the Utica City School District. The new program will include ICAN service functions, executive offices and the Children’s Museum. A 4,000 sf addition, in the shape of a translucent drum, will house a new reception area, lobby, and a two-story exhibit space featuring a universally accessible spiral walkway connecting the lobby to upper level museum display areas. The renovated museum is expected to break ground Fall 2020 with plans to open by Spring 2022.
