The RPI-CHIPS project presented an exciting strategic opportunity to enhance Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s research capabilities, strengthen collaborative partnerships with research leaders, and support the institution’s academic mission. CSArch was hired in April 2024 to provide the full range of programming, design, and construction administration services for the interior fit-up of a 6,000-square-foot office space to house RPI's Semiconductor CoLab. The CoLab serves as a cutting-edge hub for research, education, and talent development in the fast-growing semiconductor industry.

Designed to foster collaboration, the CoLab positions RPI at the epicenter of the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, linking students, faculty, and industry experts in an environment that accelerates innovation and directly addresses the nation’s critical need for a highly skilled semiconductor workforce.

By combining advanced research capabilities with hands-on training and academic programming, the space helps prepare the next generation of engineers and scientists while strengthening partnerships that drive technological and economic growth.

Welcoming, Functional, and Flexible Spaces

Open Desk Clusters

Student workstations are designed with flexibility and comfort in mind, featuring height-adjustable desks for both sitting and standing work, ergonomic chairs, and mobile cabinetry.

Wellbeing Features

To enhance overall wellbeing, design features include glass partitions along interior spaces for more natural light, upgraded HVAC and ventilation systems, modern LED lighting with dimming features, ergonomic furniture, and acoustic ceiling baffles.

Meeting Spaces

In addition to modern offices and workspaces for researchers and faculty, the space includes a flexible 40-seat conference room for interactive learning and a dedicated meeting room to support project planning and industry engagement.

Reception Area

A modern reception designed to welcome students, researchers, and guests with ease—featuring a large desk, integrated screen, and a bright, inviting atmosphere.

Private Offices

Separate office spaces provide faculty with a private, quiet place to work or take meetings. Designed with comfort and productivity in mind, each office offers privacy while remaining connected to the larger workplace.
