Academic Podium
Completed over 4 phases, the project involves a structural assessment of canopies, facades, and columns at every building within the Academic Podium, which houses many of the college’s largest degree programs.
Concrete Restoration
The concrete restoration process involves several intensive steps including power washing, removal of PCB sealant and hazardous materials, removal of damaged concrete, patching with repair mortar, and application of several coatings to ensure long-lasting repairs.
Dorm Quads
In addition to the concrete restoration, the dormitories were also outfitted with new bird devices in the eaves of the buildings, as well as new lighting and signage where required.

Project Scope

Designed in the 1960s by world renowned architect Edward Durell Stone, the four Dormitory Quads at the University at Albany are perhaps the most unique, defining structures of the college’s main Uptown Campus. Exposed concrete is among the most prominent feature of the original construction, encompassing over 3 million sf of exposed concrete surfaces across campus. An evaluation of the condition of the canopies revealed spalling and delamination, shrinkage cracks, leaks of the expansion joints, and rust damage to the steel reinforcements within the concrete. As part of a Contract Term Agreement, CSArch was hired to repair and restore 35,000 square feet of canopies at all four quads. CSArch is also responsible for the concrete restoration of the Academic Podium and low-rise dormitories in the center of the campus, as deterioration of concrete over the past 50 years has resulted in conditions ranging from minor surface weathering to large concrete spalls.
