UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES

Acting on a vision for a catalyzed economy and a united community, this project will transform the original 1912 Albany High School into a state-of-the-art College of Engineering and Applied Sciences for the University at Albany.

Redirected Main Entrance

To improve student accessibility and connect the facility with UAlbany's downtown campus, the main entrance and promenade were purposefully designed on the southeast side of the building facing inward toward campus.

Maker Tinker Space

The maker tinker space replaces the existing high school gym, featuring 3D printing technology, metal fabricators, an adjacent wood shop, and small collaborative spaces for group study.

Multi-Use Classroom Lab

Situated off the main lobby is a new multi-purpose classroom space. Foldable glass wall panels can easily reconfigure the space to flow into the main lobby for larger events and seminars.

Research Laboratories

To assist students and professors in conducting cutting-edge research, a new computational research laboratory will provide high-powered technology for the analysis of large-scale data sources.

On June 21, 2022, University at Albany announced a new initiative dedicated to artificial intelligence research. The program will leverage the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences to begin a new era of teaching and research that expands New York's capacity in this emerging field.

Project Scope

With CSArch as a partner, University at Albany is transforming the former 1912 Albany High School into a state-of-the-art College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The century-old, 160,000 sf space will receive full programming, design, and construction administration services to strengthen the region's only public research university and align its mission with the immediate community that supports it.

The historic rehabilitation of the building's three-story auditorium will be able to seat nearly 1,000 students, making it the largest auditorium on UAlbany's campus. Encompassing $80.1 million in renovations, the project will expand the size of UAlbany's downtown campus by about 40 percent and serve more than 1,000 students and faculty.
