SERVICE BUILDING ADMINISTRATION COMPLEX

UAlbany employed CSArch for the reorganization of facility departments, the adaptive re-use of existing buildings, the addition of department offices, improved efficiency of circulation and service spaces, and the preservation of a mid-century modern structure originally constructed in the 1960s.

Collaborative Work Environment

To foster collaboration between departments, a combination of open work space and transparent offices were introduced, and an open, internal stair was added.

Enhanced Natural Light

A new 40-foot long skylight sits above the stairway and brings daylight down to the first floor, providing a sense of openness.

Project Scope

CSArch provided design services on a mid-century modern structure originally designed by Edward Durrell Stone in the 1960s. The University at Albany requested that the interior be expressive of the nature of the departments.

This goal, combined with a constrained existing floor-to-floor height, resulted in an aesthetic that balances a utilitarian space comprised of partially open ceilings with exposed mechanical/electrical systems, with a clean, modern-looking facility consistent with Edward Durrell Stone's design intent.
